Features of Messor structor (Harvester Ants)
Messor structor, or the harvester ant, is the simplest and most common species of ants in domestic ant farms. This species can be found in the steppe regions of our country from the south of the Volgograd region to the Astrakhan, Rostov, and Krasnodar regions. Harvesters are a fairly slow-moving and non-aggressive species. You won't have trouble catching an "escapee" in case it manages to get out of the farm. Messor structor builds its nests in the soil, with tunnels stretching several meters deep. Families develop rapidly with good and varied feeding; ants can reach a population of 1000 individuals already in the first year of existence. Harvesters are not picky eaters; their diet consists of various plant seeds such as clover, rape, millet, barley, poplar seeds, dandelions, among others. For protein, it is recommended to provide ants with various feeder insects purchased from a pet store. When the colony is fewer than 50 individuals, it is not recommended to provide large insects; during this period, mealworms or crickets are suitable. As the colony grows, you can offer them zoophobas, cockroaches, crickets. Ants are not demanding in terms of high humidity levels and temperature. For harvesters, the temperature can range from 23-28 degrees Celsius, with moderate humidity of 50-60%, which is optimal for their maintenance at home.
Appearance and sizes of ants
The ant's body has a black or dark brown color, covered with a hard exoskeleton. In the colony of harvesters, there is a division of ants into castes. The central place is occupied by the queen or queen, and workers and soldiers with large jaws are also present in the colony.
The massive head with large mandibles in soldiers is used to gnaw large grains, while in ordinary workers, the head is several times smaller and is intended for feeding larvae and cleaning the nest. Large soldiers do not appear in the farm immediately, but with the right diet, the colony will delight you with large soldiers.
Males and females in the colony rarely appear, usually occurring after the death of the queen, indicating a decline in the colony. Large soldiers can lay eggs, but only males will emerge from them, further weakening your colony.
